Has Kendrick Lamar gone too far?

As I was browsing my phone, I saw that everyone on Facebook and Instagram was posting something about a Kendrick Lamar verse. Apparently K. Dot caused quite a stir on the social media world with his verse on Big Sean’s “Control” which the Compton MC is featured on along with Jay Electronica, who really isn't relevant in my opinion, but that’s another story for another day.

So, I kept looking and reading about this track that has the world doing flip flops, while others like me can’t help but think that K. Dot is on another level with regards to being an MC. He indeed raised the bar over a simple beat for all rappers who proclaim themselves as MC’s, but who are stuck in the glitz and glamour of being a rap star and rapping about nonsense that most everyday people don’t give a shit about.

Kendrick Lamar did something that not too many rap artists have done; he named dropped on a verse, and that can usually mean only one thing. Beef! But, he isn't looking for beef; he’s simply letting the competition know that he is about the business of becoming a legend while skipping the steps of cool and great. If he had to step on some toes, then so be it. He wants to be better than the rest and have others dreaming of comparisons to him. Hip Hop has evolved so much, but Kendrick Lamar is trying to make the game evolve around him, while leaving everyone else nothing but scraps.

Everyone of course has their own insights for what Kendrick said, but the weather forecast for Kendrick in the upcoming months may not be good because most of the rappers who were mentioned on Kendrick’s verse may take it in a positive competitive manner or the other way. If Kendrick hadn't name dropped his verse wouldn't be relevant, it would just be another dope Kendrick Lamar verse, but the passion and fire in which he displayed showed that not only is he the next great one, but crossing the line may only be the first step in the evolution of Kendrick Lamar who looks at himself as a second coming to the legendary “Tupac.” And, for what it’s worth maybe the rap game is due for someone who may be above and beyond the level of someone like Tupac.

Tupac left a major void in the hip hop industry, he was a voice for so many people who had struggled and who could relate to his lyrics. He rebelled against those who were in his way and showed no mercy to any other rapper who tried to challenge him, and maybe Kendrick is finally taking note of what Pac did in the past and applying it in his own version.

Kendrick Lamar put out an album that is now considered a classic, and if he continues on the path of staying true to himself and not getting caught in the bullshit that the hip hop industry offers, than we may all be witnessing an MC who may top the others who came before him. Crossing the line is the just the first step in the evolution of Kendrick Lamar because after all it is a competition… Peace.
